Antwerp Airport Welcomes 260,000 Passengers in Centennial Year 2023

Antwerp Airport had an excellent year, celebrating its centenary, welcoming a new airline, and adding five destinations to its offerings. “These are all evidence of the growing popularity of our airport,” says CEO Eric Dumas.

In total, the airport welcomed 259,764 passengers last year, an increase of 8.5% compared to 2022. This brings the total in 2023 to 85% of the number of passengers who traveled through Antwerp Airport in the pre-COVID year 2019. “We look back with great satisfaction on 2023,” says CEO Eric Dumas. “In September, more than 35,000 passengers traveled through Antwerp Airport for the first time. This milestone is proof of the growing popularity of our airport.” Choosing a regional departure means opting for a comfortable and stress-free departure due to the fast processing times.

“In 2024, we expect to reach the milestone of 300,000 passengers and thus match the level of 2019,” says Eric Dumas. “The new destinations introduced in 2023 will undoubtedly contribute to this.”

Five New Destinations

In early January 2023, the airport welcomed Luxair as a new airline. With the addition of Luxair, travelers can once again benefit from six weekly flights to London City.

Thanks to the introduction of new aircraft by TUI fly, four additional destinations were added to the airport’s offerings in 2023: Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Antalya, and Crete-Heraklion.

In late December, SkyAlps also began their second flying season from Antwerp. The Italian airline has been flying to Bolzano in South Tyrol since December 2022 during the winter season. In total, passengers in 2023 could choose from 15 destinations and four airlines (TUI, Luxair, SkyAlps & ASL Fly Executive) from Antwerp.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, an increasing number of businesses and individuals discovered business aviation, leading to growth in this segment. Since the beginning of 2023, we have observed a stabilization of growth in the business flight segment.

Innovating with Environmental Focus

In June 2023, the Embraer E195-E2 was officially inaugurated in Antwerp, TUI fly’s new aircraft specifically deployed for Antwerp Airport. With the latest engines on the market, this aircraft represents a significant technological and sustainable advancement, resulting in a 33% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to the E190 it replaces. The substantial decrease in noise production is also a significant contribution to the well-being of the airport’s neighbors. “We are very pleased with this investment, primarily due to its positive impact on emissions and noise. Additionally, this investment demonstrates confidence in the future of our airport.”

In 2024, Antwerp Airport aims to focus even more on innovations that will redefine the aviation sector, with a particular emphasis on electric flying. “We want to take a leading role in sustainable aviation technologies, aiming to reduce the aviation industry’s ecological footprint and guide the industry towards a sustainable future. We strive to continue the positive trend and strengthen our role as a significant regional airport,” concludes Eric Dumas.

TUI FLY OFFERS THREE NEW DESTINATIONS FROM ANTWERP

Airline TUI fly is expanding its offer from Antwerp airport for the summer season with the launch of 3 new destinations. As of June 30, TUI fly will connect Antwerp with Tenerife (Spain), Antalya (Turkey) and Heraklion (Crete). The traveler has the option to book a ticket via TUI fly or book a package trip from tour operator TUI. With this expansion, TUI is responding to the demand of travelers to be able to depart from an airport close to where they live to popular destinations.

The launch of these new lines is made possible by the arrival of three new Embraer aircraft type E195-E2 in TUI fly’s fleet. These environmentally friendly aircraft will replace the Embraer E190 that were put into service in 2016. The new aircraft will make it possible to travel longer distances.

Due to technically more performant engines and adjustments in aerodynamics, CO2 emissions per seat are as much as 33% lower than for the Embraer E190. Within a normal flight program, this means 29.7 tons fewer emissions per seat annually. On takeoff and landing, the noise of the E195 carries up to 50% less than that of the E190. This makes the E195 E2 among the very quietest aircraft within the “regional” segment, the smaller aircraft type

Gunther Hofman, Managing Director of TUI fly Western Region: “TUI fly Belgium has already proven its commitment to environmentally friendly aviation. We are therefore sincerely pleased that TUI Airline gives us the opportunity to offer the innovative E195 E2 exclusively to the Belgian traveler. Very important is also that we can bring a positive ecological story to the immediate vicinity of the Antwerp airport.”

Antwerp airport looks back on strong 2022

Antwerp Airport has had an excellent year. The airport welcomed 239,500 passengers last year, which is 63% more than in 2021.

“After two exceptional and difficult years, 2022 allowed for a return to full travel. The airport can therefore record excellent passenger figures and excellent occupancy rates over the full year,” said CEO Eric Dumas. “Between April and August, our airport welcomed the same number of passengers as in 2019. The fact that carefree travel was once again possible was clearly visible.”

63% more passengers

In total, the airport welcomed 239,500 passengers last year, an increase of 63% over 2021 and again 79% of the number of passengers who travelled through the airport in 2019. In September and October, our airport was closed for five weeks due to the renovation of the runway. These works were necessary to ensure aircraft land and take off safely in the coming years too.

“These works were essential for the future of the airport. We will benefit of these investments by the LOM in the coming years. Without the temporary closure, we would have welcomed almost the same number of passengers as in 2019. We are very satisfied and are looking forward to 2023,” says D umas.

“Antwerp Airport aims to welcome more than 310,000 annual  passengers by 2025. The launch of the route to Bolzano with SkyAlps and the restart of flights to London City with Luxair in January should contribute to this,” says Dumas. “The larger and more fuel-efficient aircraft that TUI fly will put into service in 2023 should also ensure that even more travellers can depart via Antwerp. Furthermore, we remain strongly committed to route development and hope to persuade airlines to fly to and from Antwerp.”

Excellent year for business aviation

Excluding the 5-week closure of the airport due to runway renovation, the airport is recording a 26% increase compared to 2021, and is even doing 10% better than in 2019. This means 2022 would have been a record breaking year for business aviation in normal circumstances. “The market has seen a rapid recovery after the corona pandemic. Thanks to private jet companies such as FlyingGroup, ASL Group and The Aviation Factory, business/private aviation in Antwerp is flourishing like never before. That Antwerp Airport is an important business airport is once again proven by these growth figures,” says CEO Eric Dumas.

11 destinations in 2023

In 2023, travellers will be able to fly from Antwerp to 11 destinations. These destinations will be offered by four airlines: TUI fly, ASL Fly Executive, SkyAlps and Luxair.

Antwerp airport welcomes first flight from SkyAlps

Italian airline SkyAlps operated its first flight from Antwerp Airport on Wednesday 21 December. SkyAlps will fly to Bozen/Bolzano, Italy, three times a week until mid-April.

On Wednesday at 4.15pm, SkyAlps’ first flight landed at our airport. The plane was welcomed to our airport with a perfectly choreographed water salute by our airport fire brigade.

In the terminal, arriving and departing passengers were welcomed by Wim Verbist (Airport Commander) and Stephen Marnef (Station Manager SkyAlps).

Wim Verbist (Airport Commander): “We are grateful to SkyAlps for choosing and trusting our airport. There has been demand for flights from Antwerp to Italy for a long time now. Thanks to the launch of SkyAlps, travellers will be able to fly to the Italian Dolomites three times a week.”

The opening of this route by our new partner is a very positive signal for Antwerp Airport. “Antwerp Airport aims to welcome more than 310,000 passengers a year by 2025. Today we are already on the right track. After two difficult years, we welcomed just over 240,000 passengers again this year. That is an increase of 70% compared to last year. The opening of this new route is therefore fantastic news for our airport and travellers”, Verbist continued.

Stephen Marnef (SkyAlps): “We are delighted to officially open our route from Antwerp to Bolzano today. In less than two hours you can fly from Antwerp to Bolzano. That’s five times faster than by car, and therefore more time to get on the slats.”

“Your holiday starts on board with SkyAlps,” Marnef continues. “We have partnered with 25 wine producers in South Tyrol and offer 28 different top wines on board. These can be perfectly paired with all kinds of delicacies from the region. So en route, you can get a taste of what South Tyrol has to offer without paying extra for it.”

Good occupancy rate

At 5.05 pm, the first flight left for Bolzano. On board were around 40 enthusiastic travellers. “We are already seeing a nice occupancy rate for the first flight today. We are confident that this number will increase in the following weeks. Both our airport and that of Bolzano and SkyAlps itself, are pushing hard for passenger comfort. Something that is greatly appreciated by many travellers,” Verbist concludes.

Fuel efficiënt aircraft

The flights are operated with a De Havilland Dash DHC-8-Q400 that seats 78 passengers. The Dash DHC-8 Q400 aircraft is an extremely fast turboprop aircraft that can cover short distances almost as fast as a regional turbojet. On top of that, it is also a very fuel-efficient aircraft. With consumption of 2.3 litres of fuel per passenger per 100 kilometres, its consumption and CO2 emissions are as much as 40% below the European average. The Italian airline also makes it possible to offset your CO2 emissions when making a booking.

About Bolzano

Antwerp and Ostend-Bruges Airport look back on strong summer holidays

The airports of Antwerp and Ostend-Bruges look back positively on the summer vacations. The airports welcomed almost 50% more passengers than one year ago. After two years full of travel restrictions due to corona, travelers clearly enjoy going on vacation by plane again. Thereby, vacationers opt more and more for regional airports. The Ostend-Bruges and Antwerp Airports welcomed a total of just under 160,000 passengers this summer vacation.

Travel via the regional airports is on the rise. The regional airports of Ostend-Bruges and Antwerp welcomed remarkably more passengers this summer. A total of 158,614 passengers traveled via the regional airports this summer vacation, an increase of 48% compared to 2021 and again 80% of the number of passengers who traveled via our airports in 2019 – before corona.

Antwerp Airport: “96% of the number of passengers in 2019”.

In July and August, 64,529 passengers chose Antwerp Airport to travel. That is an increase of 72% compared to last year and 97.3% of the number of passengers who chose our airport – for corona – in the summer of 2019. A very positive result that exceeds the expected passenger number. “The airport has had a very strong summer,” says CEO Eric Dumas. “There was again plenty of travel this summer and we are noticing more and more that people prefer to depart and arrive via a regional airport.”

A total of 191,000 passengers have already traveled via Antwerp Airport this year. That’s a whopping 96.3% of the number of passengers we welcomed in the same period in 2019. “It gives everyone at the airport a huge boost to see these great figures. The airport continues to work hard to welcome even more passengers in the future. Between September 19 and October 25, the airport will be temporarily closed. The runway will then be given a new top layer. These works are essential to be able to welcome hundreds of thousands of holidaymakers in the years to come,” says Dumas.

At the end of December the airport will also welcome an Italian airline with SkyAlps. SkyAlps will operate 3 flights weekly to Bolzano in the Italian Dolomites.

Business flights

Business and private aviation is also on the rise at Antwerp Airport. The market has seen a rapid recovery after the corona pandemic. As of June 2021, business and private flights exceeded the 2019 figures. This year, the number of business flights already recorded an increase of more than 16% compared to the same period in 2019. And this summer records were broken again. The number of business flights via Antwerp Airport in July and August was no less than 29% higher than during the summer of 2019.

“Thanks to private jet companies such as Flyinggroup, ASL Group, The Aviation Factory and Deutz Aviation, all of which are based in Antwerp and are known worldwide, business/private aviation in Antwerp is flourishing like never before,” says CEO Eric Dumas.

Ostend-Bruges Airport

In July and August, 94,085 passengers chose Oostende-Brugge Airport for their vacations. That is an increase of 34% compared to 2021. Travelers could choose from 13 destinations in Greece, Spain and Turkey this summer. This summer, the airport welcomed again 73% of the number of passengers traveling through our airport during the summer of 2019. “We are pleased that people have found their way back to our airport,” says CEO Eric Dumas. “Comparing the figures with 2019 is difficult, because then a total of 22 destinations were flown. This summer we only had 13 destinations on offer from Ostend. We hope to add new destinations soon.”

A total of 250,578 passengers already traveled via Ostend Airport this year.

Regional airports popular

The regional airports always offer travelers a comfortable departure without stress. Therefore, the airports are gaining popularity among travelers. “Whoever chooses a regional departure, immediately chooses a comfortable departure without stress. Our airports are not crowded and we are always easily accessible. There is a family atmosphere at our airports. We therefore recommend that passengers arrive no earlier than 2 hours before departure.”

“The short walking distances and fast check-in are for many passengers the decisive factor to travel via Oostende or Antwerp. Now that many airports are facing staff and capacity shortages, the regional airports can play an important role.”

RUNWAY AT ANTWERP AIRPORT GETS RENOVATED

Infrastructure works will soon take place at Antwerp Airport. The runway will be renovated. This is necessary to continue to guarantee safe air traffic in the future. The airport will be temporarily closed for this purpose between 19 September 2022 and 25 October 2022.

The works will be carried out on behalf of LOM Vlaanderen, which is responsible for the maintenance of the basic infrastructure at Antwerp Airport. The LOM Vlaanderen ensures that air traffic at the airport can continue to take place in a safe manner. LOM Vlaanderen has assigned the execution of the works to TM Willemen – Aertssen after consultation with the market.

The planned works

The planned works aim at eliminating the difference in height at the transition between the runway and the runway strip (the zone around the runway). This will minimize the risk of material damage when an aircraft leaves the runway.

In addition, the surfacing of the runway will be renovated. In this way the LOM Vlaanderen prevents the runway from becoming unsafe in the long term. The aim of the work is to extend the life of the road surface by repairing the damage that has occurred in recent years due to wear and tear and localised subsidence. The last renovation works on the runway date back to the mid-90s, with the current renovation LOM Vlaanderen ensures that the runway can remain operational for another 20 years.

Sustainability

Antwerp Airport attaches great importance to sustainability. In addition to the renovation of the runway, a new sewer system and drainage system will be installed. The rainwater that falls on the runway will be buffered on the airport site and discharged (delayed) in the direction of a nearby parc. This means that the rainwater will no longer be discharged into the public sewers. The necessary agreements have been made with Aquafin. In addition, the electricity cabling will be replaced, so that the runway can henceforth make use of sustainable LED lighting.

No change to the runway

The LOM Vlaanderen emphasizes that the works are only aimed at renovating the current runway. The runway will not be extended. The surface of the pavement will not be changed. The bearing capacity of the runway (PCN value) remains unchanged. The category of the runway remains the same as before. The works will not lead to an increase in the capacity of the runway. The renovation will not allow any larger aircraft to land at the airport than those which can already use it today. The traffic that is possible at the airport remains identical, and the conditions of the environmental permit of 2008 remain fully applicable.

No environmental permit required

No environmental permit is required for the execution of these works. Although the planned works have a certain scope, they do not concern a modification or extension of the runway and there is no change of function that gives rise to changed environmental effects (the category/capacity of the runway remains unchanged). The exemption decree* is therefore applicable.

Neighbors of the airport

During the work, local residents will be taken into account as much as possible. Possible nuisance will be limited to the absolute minimum. For this reason, work will not be carried out 24 hours a day, between 7 am and 10 pm. Nor will work be carried out on Sundays (this will only happen if the work is delayed, for example by extremely bad weather conditions). That way, the possible nuisance for the people living in the neighbourhood will be limited to an absolute minimum.

Due to the works, there will be no flights between September 19 and October 25. From 26 October onwards we would like to welcome our passengers again at Antwerp Airport!

AIRPORT CLOSES FROM 19 SEPTEMBER TO 25 OCTOBER DUE TO RUNWAY RENOVATION WORKS

This autumn, Antwerp Airport’s runway will be completely renewed. As a result, the airport will be closed to all air traffic between 19 September and 25 October. The runway renovation will be carried out by LOM Vlaanderen, the Airport Development Company that is responsible for the management and maintenance of the airport infrastructure on behalf of the Flemish Government.

The renovation of the runway of an airport is necessary to be able to continue to guarantee safety. During the reconstruction, a great deal of effort is put into sustainability. In addition to a new asphalt layer, there will also be new sewerage and drainage systems. The lighting will also be replaced by sustainable LED lighting.

During the work, local residents will be taken into account as much as possible. For this reason, it was decided not to work 24 hours a day. The runway will be worked on every day between 7 am and 10 pm. This means that the work will take a little longer than is theoretically possible, but the possible nuisance for local residents will be limited to the absolute minimum.

The airport will remain fully operational until 18 September 2022. After the works, all activities will restart. Airlines TUI Fly will once again be flying from Antwerp as of 26 October.

Passenger numbers at Antwerp Airport back at pre-corona level

In the second quarter, 81.705 passengers travelled via Antwerp Airport. That is  97.5% of the number of passengers who used to fly via our airport in the second quarter of 2019, before the corona crisis. Business travel and private aviation at Antwerp Airport are also flourishing. The business segment exceeds the 2019 figures by more than 10%.

Antwerp Airport once again recorded strong passenger figures in the second quarter. In April, May and June, 81.705 passengers travelled via Antwerp. “The strong figures of the first quarter also continued in April, May and June,” emphasises Eric Dumas CEO of Antwerp Airport. “This quarter we received barely 2.5% fewer passengers than in the second quarter of 2019, before the corona crisis (83.773).”

Since the start of this year, passenger numbers have been rising month after month. June was therefore the best month since the start of the corona crisis. “For the first time, more than 30,000 passengers travelled via our airport in June. Our customers are clearly in the mood to travel again. Also in July and August, we expect more than 30,000 passengers each month”, said CEO Eric Dumas.

In total, the airport welcomed 126,496 passengers during the first half of the year. That is 224% more than in 2021 and barely 4% less than in the record year 2019.

Business flights

Business and private aviation at Antwerp Airport is also doing very well. The market has experienced a quick recovery after the corona pandemic. During the second quarter, the number of business and private flights rose by 30% compared to the same period last year. Compared to 2019, the airport records an increase of 11%.

Looking at the entire first half of the year, business and private flights grew by 45% compared to last year. Compared to the first six months of 2019, the airport can record a growth of 11.3%. “Thanks to the companies using private jets such as FlyingGroup, ASL Group and The Aviation Factory, business/private aviation in Antwerp is flourishing like never before. Together with these world-renowned companies, we are putting Antwerp on the map. Antwerp has always been an important business airport, and proves this once again with these wonderful growth figures,” says CEO Eric Dumas.

Since covid, the group of people that flies privately has changed considerably. Not only business people travel with a private jet. Increasingly, families and larger groups of friends are opting for a private flight. This is because they are more flexible that way. It makes it possible to travel in small groups, there are no waiting times and you can leave whenever you want.

OSTEND-BRUGES AND ANTWERP AIRPORTS EXPECT 150.000 PASSENGERS THIS SUMMER

After two years full of travel restrictions, travellers clearly have renewed confidence in their travel plans and in the regional airports. Therefore, the Ostend-Bruges and Antwerp airports are getting ready for a busy summer during which they expect about 150,000 passengers.

The summer holidays are just around the corner. Those who travel to the sun via Ostend-Bruges Airport this summer can choose from a total of 12 Spanish and Greek destinations. The absolute top destination of this summer is Malaga. The Spanish seaside resort is closely followed by the Canary Islands and Alicante, which complete the top three. The airport expects about 90,000 passengers this summer.

This summer, Antwerp Airport can be used to travel to 9 destinations in Spain, Croatia, France and Morocco. With seven flights a week each, Malaga and Alicante in Antwerp come out on top. Ibiza is the third most popular destination from the diamond city. Besides TUI fly, ASL Fly Deluxe flies twice a week from Antwerp to Ibiza. The flights of ASL take place between 29 June and 17 August. In total the Antwerp airport expects about 60,000 passengers during the summer months.

Regional airports popular

The regional airports offer travellers a comfortable departure without stress. The airports are gaining popularity with travellers. “Our airports have a family atmosphere”, emphasizes Eric Dumas, CEO of the Ostend-Bruges and Antwerp airports. “Whoever opts for a regional departure, also opts for a comfortable departure without stress. Our airports are not crowded and are always easily accessible. We advise passengers to arrive no earlier than two hours before departure.

“The short walking distances, cheaper parking rates and quick check-in are for many passengers the decisive factor to travel via Oostende or Antwerp. Now that many airports are struggling with staff and capacity shortages, the regional airports can play an important role. Our airports can still handle extra flights, as we clearly proved on Monday 20 June. And all this without the passengers who choose for our airports having to compromise on comfort”, concludes Dumas.

Gunther Hofman, Managing Director TUI fly Belgium: “We are very happy with the additional flights that TUI fly can continue to offer from the regional airports. For years now, our passengers have greatly appreciated the comfort of being able to depart close to home and they have always given an excellent score to the small scale and friendly service that characterise the airports of Ostend and Antwerp.”

71% fewer passengers in 2020 for Antwerp Airport that continues to invest in the future

Antwerp Airport received 71.3% fewer passengers last year. A total of 88,036 passengers travelled through our airport. (306,330 in 2019). The airport looks optimistically at the new year and is convinced that our regional airport can create a safe environment for the passengers.

Passenger figures

2020 started promisingly for Antwerp Airport. The airport almost welcomed 40,000 passengers in January and February combined. That is an increase of 26% to the same period in 2019. With these figures, we were heading for a record year once again.

However, in March we were confronted with a different reality. The coronavirus caused all passenger flights of Air Antwerp and TUI Fly to be temporarily suspended between mid-March and early July. After a good preparation and strict precautions, flights from TUI Fly to Ibiza (Spain) and Split (Croatia) departed again on July 10th. Other top destinations in Spain were also included in an alternative summer program. In July and August, the airport experienced a slight recovery. 24,000 passengers travelled via Antwerp Airport during the summer holidays. The demand for these popular destinations remained high and occupancy rates were also very good despite the Corona pandemic.

From August onwards, the number of travel restrictions in Belgium increased again. TUI Fly therefore decided to suspend its flights until the autumn holidays from September 10th. During the autumn holiday, flights were temporarily offered again to the top destination Alicante.

Air Antwerp resumed their operations on September 15th with an adjusted timetable. The quarantine measures in the UK made traveling to London very difficult. In addition, the demand for business flights was limited. In December, Air Antwerp decided to temporarily suspend their flights again until March 2021.

A total of 71.3% fewer passengers travelled through Antwerp airport in the past year. 88,036 compared to 306,330 in 2019.

Passenger comfort

Last year, the airport also realised some projects for the comfort of the passengers. For example, the parking in front of the airport building and the kiss & ride-zone were modernised. The adjustments ensure that the walking distance from your car to the airport building is limited to one minute. In addition, passengers were able to shop in the brand new Duty Free shop for the first time this summer.

In addition, we continue to invest in improving our passenger experience and comfort. In this way, the departure hall will be further expanded and a new arrival hall will be provided. With these additional investments, we hope to welcome passengers again from February onwards.

Safe travel environment

As an airport we are ready and convinced that travelers can travel safely and relaxed through our airport. The airport has invested heavily in safe and efficient procedures in the recent months. Besides that, the regional nature of our airport ensures that few flights depart at the same time. In this way, there are a limited number of passengers in the airport building and the distance can be ensured at any time. This creates an extra safe environment for the passengers.

Business flights

2020 also was a difficult year for business flights. The number of movements decreased by 34% compared to 2019. Especially the first half of the year was very difficult. In the second half of the year the business segment made a nice recovery.

2021

The airport looks optimistically towards 2021. We expect Air Antwerp and TUI Fly to resume this spring. Passengers will have the opportunity to fly from Antwerp Airport to 11 destinations this year. We also expect the share of business flights to grow further. Both ASL and FLYINGGROUP have invested significantly in the expansion and renewal (and sustainability) of their airport infrastructure. All this in order to support further growth.
